Yes, tourists visiting Amsterdam will be able to marry a local for a day and go on a date with a ‘spouse’ to visit the city.
This unique initiative aims to counteract the negative effects of overcrowding.
At present, the city receives 19 million tourists annually and this number is expected to reach 30 million in a decade, while the number of residents is 1 million, who are not happy with the promotion of tourism.
To this end, the Amsterdam tourist movement was launched to use the growing number of tourists for positive things in the city.
One of the various initiatives of this movement is to ‘marry a resident of Amsterdam’, in which a local resident will marry a tourist in a traditional ceremony, namely exchange of rings, promises and wedding attire etc.
The event will take 35 minutes while the couple will spend their honeymoon exploring parts of the city that are not very popular.
Basically, the wedding will be legal, not academic, and the movement’s organizer said it would be an opportunity for visitors to have meaningful contact with a local.
Another initiative would be ‘Wade Dating’, which would involve tourists and a local to get to know each other and pick herbs from farmhouses, or take a walk in a park with an elderly resident. ۔
