Russia: A female journalist set herself suicide after conducting a ‘house search’

In Russia, a female journalist set herself on fire in front of the Interior Ministry in protest of a house search by police.

The Guardian reports that Irina Slavina, a female journalist in the Russian city of Novgorod, set herself on fire in front of the local Interior Ministry office a day after police searched her apartment.

“I want to tell you that the Russian Federation should be blamed for my death,” Irina Slavina wrote on her Facebook page before committing suicide.

According to the report, Irina Slavina, who was working as the editor-in-chief of Koza Press, a small local news agency, had recently published an advertisement saying “there is no censorship from above, no order”.

The day before his death, he wrote on Facebook that police officers and investigators had searched his apartment and were searching for “brochures, pamphlets and accounts” of a Russian opposition group.

Police and investigators also confiscated her notebook, laptop and other electronic items, including her daughter’s laptop and her husband’s mobile phone, he said.
