US temporary license for Huawei expires

In May 2019, the United States blacklisted Huawei and its subsidiaries, barring them from providing technology to local companies.

However, since May 2019, temporary licenses have been issued to Huawei and its marquee partners to allow them to continue their work.

The duration of these temporary licenses has been extended several times, but the license has expired since August 13 and has not been extended further.

Thanks to the temporary license, Google was providing security updates and general updates of Google Apps to Huawei smartphones manufactured before May 16, 2019.

But now that the temporary license expires, it could potentially stop Google from providing software updates to Huawei’s smartphones that run on Google’s Android operating system.

A statement issued by Google in February this year stated that as a result of the US trade embargo, it was unable to provide technology or apps to Huawei’s new phones, but provided updates to Huawei phones prior to May 2019. Will continue

“We will continue to work with Huawei and provide updates and security updates to Google apps and services on older phones in compliance with government regulations,” the statement said. Is allowed

A Google spokesman said the temporary general license allowed the company to provide updates, but declined to comment on what would happen after the expiration date.

A Huawei spokesman said the company was monitoring the situation and analyzing possible impacts.

It is possible that Google Apps on Huawei phones developed before May 16, 2019, will not be able to receive further updates if the temporary license is not reissued, as Google certifies every update provided to Huawei. Is done.

Google will no longer be able to do so without full application and licensing.

By the way, it is unlikely that older Huawei phones will completely lose Google support.

Neither Huawei nor the US Department of Commerce has issued an official statement on the matter, nor has it said whether the temporary license will be extended.

If the situation is not clear, people who use Huawei and Honor’s old phones may face trouble in the near future
