ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Hamad Azhar has said that leading technology company Samsung has expressed interest in setting up the first mobile phone assembly plant in Pakistan.
On social networking site Twitter, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Hamad Azhar described the meeting with the MD and CEO of Samsung Pakistan, saying that the identification, registration and blocking of the device in connection with the manufacture of smartphones in Pakistan. System (DIRBS) and mobile policy has been formulated.

Federal Minister Hamad Azhar further wrote that top Samsung officials, while appreciating the government’s policy and initiatives, have also hinted at speeding up the process of setting up their smartphone assembly plant in Pakistan.
Earlier, senior officials of Huawei, Nokia and Samsung had expressed their desire to set up their plants in Pakistan during a meeting with FBR, PTA and Engineering Development Board on January 30. Mobile phone manufacturing in Pakistan is likely to bring down prices.
In May this year, the Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) approved Pakistan’s first mobile phone policy, following the introduction of the Internet Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority.
