PCB cricket committee chairman Iqbal Qasim’s resignation accepted

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has accepted the resignation of cricket committee chief Iqbal Qasim and said that his replacement would be announced soon.

According to a statement issued by the PCB, “Iqbal Qasim had tendered his resignation on September 3 and said that he was a dummy chairman who could not even recommend a deserving match referee.”

Iqbal Qasim had said, “It is sad to see the injustice done to cricketers who meet the eligibility criteria for playing cricket.”

The PCB said in a statement that it was “regrettable” that a well-known and experienced cricketer with the same talents as Iqbal Qasim was voluntarily resigning.

“His services to cricket as a player and as an administrative head are outstanding. The PCB respects his decision and wishes him well for the future,” the statement said.

Expressing frustration over the decision, the board said, “The PCB is disappointed that the chairman of the cricket committee is resigning instead of respecting the decision of Merit and an independent panel for not following his recommendation.”

“It is also painful for the PCB to understand that when Iqbal Qasim took over as the head of the cricket committee on January 31, 2020, the new constitution of the PCB 2019 came into force,” it added.

The PCB said that under the constitution, which came into force on August 19, 2019, the role of departmental teams had already ended.

According to the statement, Iqbal Qasim said, “When he took office, he knew that there was no room for departmental teams in the new system and structure under which the new administration was working.”

The board said that the PCB hoped that Iqbal Qasim would abide by its constitution by joining a corporate body.

“Iqbal Qasim is a loyal servant of Pakistan cricket and we hope that he will continue to offer his services in the future,” the PCB said.

It may be recalled that the PCB Cricket Committee is an advisory body like the committees of the ICC and other boards of the world which advises the Chairman of the Board on matters related to cricket.

The job of the PCB Cricket Committee is to advise the Chairman PCB on the national cricket team, the performance of its management, the structure of domestic cricket, high performance centers and the conditions of the game.

According to the board, the cricket committee has the power to summon the concerned persons to its meeting on a quarterly basis to review their performance.

It may be recalled that the PCB had appointed Iqbal Qasim as the chairman of the cricket committee on February 6, 2020, while other members included former captain Wasim Akram, chief selector and women’s cricket representative Urooj Mumtaz, former cricketer Umar Gul and former Test cricketer Ali Naqvi. Were included.

The statement said PCB chief executive Wasim Khan and international cricket director Zakir Khan would be part of the committee as assistant members.

Iqbal Qasim, after being appointed as the head of the cricket committee, had said that he was grateful to the PCB for entrusting him with this important responsibility and would try his best to fulfill it in the light of his experience.

Iqbal Qasim has taken 171 and 12 wickets in 50 Tests and 15 ODIs for Pakistan, respectively, in addition to 999 wickets in 246 domestic matches.

He played domestic cricket for almost 21 years from 1971 to 1992. In addition to being the head of the cricket committee, he has also served as the manager and chief selector of the national cricket team in the PCB and as a member of the Domestic Tournament Monitoring Committee.
