Eight people, including a police officer, were killed in a shootout between police and armed suspects in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
According to NTDV, the incident took place in a village in Kanpur. When a police team arrived to arrest the culprit of the murder, the armed accused opened fire on the police from all sides.
According to police, the suspects were armed with sophisticated weapons, including Kalashnikovs.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Devinder Kumar Mishra, three sub-inspectors and four constables were killed in the incident at Bakro village, 150 km from the state capital Lucknow.
According to the report, two accused were also killed in the retaliatory firing of the police.
It was further reported that 50 policemen from three police stations had arrived to arrest Vikas Dabe, the alleged killer of political influence.
Vikas Dabe is charged with 60 criminal cases, including murder, kidnapping, extortion and rioting, police said.
Kanpur police chief Dinesh Kumar said police planned to arrest Vikas but they ambushed and fired at police from three directions.
“There was a complete plan to attack the police,” he said.
UP Director General of Police (DGP) HC Osthi said Vikas Dubey and others had set up roadblocks on the way to the village.
Due to the road closure, the policemen had to leave their vehicles and walk towards the village in the early hours of the morning.
He said that when the police team arrived, the gang snipers opened fire on the policemen from the roofs.
“The police force also returned fire but they (the accused) were at a height and it was dark at that time,” the DGP said.
