Following the US sanctions, Chinese smartphone company Huawei has launched its operating system “Harmony OS” for developers in competition with Google Android and Apple iOS. However, it will be launched on smartphones in 2021.
During its developers’ conference in Shenzhen, Huawei said that the operating system is available for developers of smart watches, cars and TVs from today, but for smartphone developers, the operating system will be launched later this year.
Huawei chief Richard Yu says the operating system’s ability to work across different platforms makes it unique from Google Android and Apple iOS when it will be completely open source (ie any company or developer Will be able to use the code).
He told the developers that you will be able to develop your apps and use them on all devices.
Remember that Google’s Android operating system is also open source but it does not have Google’s commercial apps ie YouTube and Play Store. This Android system is currently being used in Amazon Fire tablets and Huawei’s P40 pro plus smartphones.
The main reason for Huawei to launch this operating system is the restrictions imposed on Huawei by the United States due to which Google cannot provide its services to Huawei.
It is not yet clear what benefits consumers will get from Huawei’s Harmony OS compared to Android.
