A record 16,000 new cases of the corona virus were reported in India on Wednesday, as the government called in the army to set up new treatment centers in New Delhi.
India has become the fourth most affected country by the epidemic after more than 456 cases, according to foreign news agency Reuters.
The United States, Brazil and Russia are the top three countries most affected by the corona virus.
Cases are likely to continue to rise after state governments eased sanctions.
New Delhi, the capital with a population of over 20 million, also witnessed the highest number of more than 3,900 cases in a single day on Wednesday.
Local government figures show that about 13,400 beds have been allocated for Corona patients in the city’s hospitals and health centers, of which about 6,200 are in use.
The Indian Home Ministry says 20,000 additional beds will be provided by next week in temporary health centers run by Army doctors and nurses in New Delhi.
The centers also include 10,000-bed religious centers and converted railway coaches into wards.
Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Armed forces personnel will take care of patients undergoing treatment in railway coaches in New Delhi.”
The city government estimates that by the end of July, they will have 550,000 cases of corona and will need 150,000 beds.
New Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the federal government’s new order to take every Corona patient to the health center was contrary to the patient’s examination at home and would put more strain on limited resources.
“Our ambulance and medical system is under pressure and now we have to take patients on buses,” he said.
He said that he had written a letter to the Home Ministry in this regard as the order was creating chaos in New Delhi.
