Wireless transplant to help eradicate brain cancer

Stanford: American experts have created a wireless implant that helps eliminate cancer by heating nanoparticles.

This one-of-a-kind device has been developed by Stanford University scientists that can extend the lives of patients with the fastest-growing brain cancer. When it is implanted between the scalp and its skin, it heats up the nanoparticles, which help destroy cancer cells from within.

Glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, is so severe that there is only a 5% chance of surviving for five years. It involves removing the affected part of the brain, followed by several rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but the disease returns again and again.

This technology has been tested on mice. This is a less painful method in which the treatment was carried out for 15 minutes daily for 15 days and the rats moved around under normal conditions. However, this treatment has increased his life and the cancer has definitely slowed down.

In this, very fine nanoparticles of a special type are inserted into the brain tumors. They are then activated by external heating. This can be done with electromagnetic fields, ultrasound or light. Cancer cells are killed as soon as they are heated.

The Stanford experts’ device is placed between the scalp and the skin and emits infrared rays. In this procedure, star-shaped nanoparticles made of gold are injected into the tumor. And they should be heated up to 5 degree centigrade from outside. When this process was done, the cancer cells started to destroy rapidly.

Then by increasing the energy and wavelength of the infrared rays, tumors of different sizes can be destroyed. Even in mice with brain cancer, survival was tripled and further improved when chemotherapy was administered.

Although research done on mice has been useful for humans, it is currently several years away from testing it on humans.
