Umar Akmal case; The PCB will appeal to the International Sports Court

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will file an appeal against the decision to reduce the ban on Umar Akmal for violating the anti-corruption code.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that it will appeal against the decision to reduce the ban on Umar Akmal for violating the PCB Anti-Corruption Code in the International Arbitration Court for Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This decision has been taken after a detailed review of the detailed decision issued by the Independent Adjudicator, according to which the ban on Umar Akmal was reduced from 36 months to 18 months in a sympathetic manner.

Under Section 7.5.4 of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code, the decision of the Independent Adjudicator can be appealed only to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“The PCB takes anti-corruption issues very seriously and maintains its zero tolerance policy in this regard. The PCB believes that a senior cricketer like Umar Akmal was well aware of the consequences of not informing the authorities about the contacts after attending several anti-corruption lectures at the national and international levels.

“The PCB is not proud to ban a senior cricketer like Umar Akmal, but as a credible and respected body, we need to send a clear message to all our stakeholders to show sympathy for such a person. Will not be done which will violate the rules and regulations.

“The PCB, in its commitment to fight corruption in sports, has submitted the proposed draft legislation to curb sports corruption to the relevant government authorities. In this regard, the PCB has also reviewed the existing legislation in Pakistan.

In the draft, the PCB proposes harsher penalties for those involved in corruption, illegal manipulation, betting, match-fixing and spot-fixing, as well as fines for aiding and abetting such crimes.
