Okinawa: The trend of sleeping on the streets in Japan is growing rapidly. This is called ‘rojo ne’ in the local language.
You are returning home at night after driving a tired car. Suddenly, in the middle of the road, you see someone sleeping unconscious, after which the car has to be braked immediately.
These scenes are common in Okinawa prefecture, with 7,000 such incidents reported in 2019 alone. Meanwhile, many people who slept on the road have also died. But despite a million attempts, the situation is getting worse and worse.
Such incidents are more common in Okinawa, a police officer said.
But why are so many people on the streets? The answer is that people become so addicted to alcohol that they pile up on the sidewalks and roads. But some people have also blamed the weather here because the heat and confinement are also weakening the people.
But sleeping like this on a busy highway is like inviting death. Last year, 16 accidents were recorded in which three people were killed.
According to a local report, some women and men go naked on the streets after drinking because they consider themselves at home. Some people lie down on the cold road to relax. Sometimes it is difficult to pick them up because they get into fights under the influence of alcohol.
Police have appealed to the public to keep all the lights of the car open and report such incident to the police. On the other hand, the administration has launched a campaign to stop the process of sleeping on the street on radio and TV and has also announced a fine of up to 500 500.
