The world’s largest wind turbine that powers 20,000 homes

BEIJING: Chinese company Ming Yang Smart Energy has announced that it will begin testing a prototype of the world’s largest wind turbine from next year, which will go on sale on a commercial scale by 2024. The wind turbine will be installed offshore.

Called MySE 16.0-242, the wind turbine will be 242 meters (794 feet) high and will generate 80 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.

In simple terms, this means that it will be able to generate enough electricity for 25 years to meet the needs of 20,000 households.

The world’s largest wind turbine is currently owned by the US’s Haley Aid X, developed by General Electric. The 853-foot-high wind turbine will be completed by 2023, with each blade having a length of 107 meters (351 feet).

In comparison, the height of the wind turbine of the Chinese company Ming Yang will be kept low, but each of its blades will be 118 meters (387 feet) long, which will be 11 meters longer than the Heli Aid X wind turbine blades.

According to a company press release, when the three blades of the wind turbine start rotating, they will cover a total area of 46,000 square meters, which will be larger than six football fields.

Interestingly, this wind turbine will be only 19% larger than Ming Yang’s previous largest wind turbine (MySE 11.0-203), but it is expected to generate 45% more electricity than expected. ۔

The new wind turbine will not only be fitted with a strong pillar in the middle of the ocean, but will also be mounted on a wide floating platform if needed.

It should be noted that China is currently the largest producer of wind power in the world, which increased wind power production by 71.6 gigawatts to 281 gigawatts in 2020, despite the Corona epidemic.
