The harms of smartphone blue light increase with age

Oregon: Blue light emitted from computer screens, tablets and phones is harmful to people of all ages, but older people are especially affected.

According to the research published in ‘Aging’, another magazine related to the weekly scientific journal Nature, for this research has been done on the fly called Drosophila, which is functionally and genetically very similar to humans. It is also called Phal Mukhi in common parlance.

Experts from Oregon State University conducted research on the biological clock in the body of these bees, in which they were first kept in a dark room. They were then placed in a blue-light environment where blue LEDs were installed as they aged.
Thus, two-day, 20-day and 60-day-old flies were exposed to blue light and later the mitochondria in their cells were observed. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells that make energy-generating chemicals in the form of ATP. That is why mitochondria are considered so important.

Earlier, experts had told that blue light affects the length of life, whether it falls on the eyes or shines on any part of the body. However, experts said from their research that the blue light emitted from the screen also damages the mitochondria of the cells that do not feel the light. Thus the cellular energy process is affected. Research has also shown that older bees are more sensitive to light.

On the other hand, experts are saying that natural light has a negative effect on the human’s natural internal clock (circadian rhythm). It also affects mental capacity and affects hormone production. After that, the sleeping and eating system also gets affected.

Scientists have urged the public to wear glasses with amber-style lenses, which can reduce blue light by up to 90 percent, at least to protect the eyes from this damage. Apart from this, there are many types of eyeglasses in the market. It is especially important to protect the elderly and the elderly from prolonged exposure to blue light.
