Christchurch: Important revelations have been made by Brenton Tarant, the terrorist who attacked New Zealand mosques.
According to a foreign news agency, the final four-day trial of the accused “Brenton Trent” who attacked mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, has started today in which his sentence will be determined.
Strict security arrangements have been made outside the Christchurch court for the hearing. During the hearing, the High Court judges will hear the statements of 66 witnesses while the accused Brenton Tarant will be sentenced at the end of the trial on August 27.
According to reports, the accused has been charged with 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one count of terrorism. The accused could be sentenced to at least 17 years in prison without parole. New Zealand has never had a life sentence before. This is the first time the accused has been convicted under the Terrorism Act 2002.
During the hearing, the prosecutor revealed that the accused Brenton Tarant had been preparing the project for many years for which he had obtained information about the mosques of New Zealand and also obtained footage of these mosques through drone cameras.
The prosecutor told the court that in a statement to the police after the arrest, the accused said that his aim was to wreak havoc and create fear among Muslims, he wanted to kill as many people as possible, mosques after the shooting. It was also part of his plan to set fire to the mosque, while after killing 51 people in two mosques, he intended to target the third mosque.
It should be noted that on March 15, 2019, Brenton Tarant, an Australian citizen, broke into two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand during Friday prayers and opened fire indiscriminately, killing 51 people and injuring 41 others. The action was also broadcast live.
