Saudi embassy in the Netherlands fired on, suspect arrested

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the Saudi embassy in The Hague, Netherlands, after which a suspect was arrested.

Police said there were no casualties in the shooting, according to foreign news agency AFP.

He said the Saudi embassy in The Hague was fired upon at 6 p.m.

Pictures aired on local channels show bullet casings scattered on the road, while the embassy windows have bullet marks.

A police spokesman said it was too early to say what caused the shooting at the Saudi embassy, ​​but that an investigation was under way.

Police later said a 40-year-old suspect was detained near the embassy in the town of Zotrmir, whose identity has not been revealed under Dutch law.

A statement from the Saudi embassy called the incident a “cowardly attack.”

The statement added that Saudi nationals in the Netherlands should be careful.

The Saudi embassy praised the Dutch authorities for their prompt response to the incident.

The statement expressed hope that they would await an investigation into the incident and bring those behind it to justice.

In this regard, the Dutch Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the shooting incident at the Saudi embassy is being taken very seriously and we are in constant contact with the Saudi authorities.

It should be noted that the attack on the Saudi embassy in the Netherlands took place at a time when several people were injured in a bomb attack on a ceremony held in memory of the victims of the First World War in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Cars were also involved.

In this regard, the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “the annual celebration of the end of World War I was underway in a non-Muslim cemetery in Jeddah, which was attended by officials from several consulates, including France.”

Last month, a Saudi national stabbed a guard at the French consulate in Jeddah, injuring a guard, while a knife attack on a church in the French city of Nice killed three people on the same day.
