Protests erupt in US after police kill black man

NEW YORK: Riots erupted in the US state of Philadelphia just a week before the election after a black man was killed by police, killing the 27-year-old man with a knife in his hand.

According to the French news agency AFP, local media reported that two police officers killed a man on Monday afternoon when the man’s mother was stopping him but he refused to throw a knife.

The man’s family questioned why he needed to use a deadly weapon, saying he had mental health problems.

On the other hand, hundreds of protesters gathered on the streets after the firing, which was pushed back by the police with the help of batons.

However, sporadic riots and looting took place at various places in the city throughout the night, during which 30 police officers were injured, including one officer whose leg was broken by a truck crash.

A Philadelphia police spokesman said most of the injuries were caused by bricks and stones.

Police spokesman Miguel Torres said “all the injured in different hospitals are in good condition.”

The United States has seen a wave of protests and riots since police killed a black man in Minnesota in May.

Many protesters accused the police of racism and atrocities, but Trump focused on proving himself as a candidate for “peace and order” in the ongoing election campaign against Biden over the riots.

Alyssa Farah, the White House’s director of communications, said in a statement that “we stand ready to use federal resources if needed.”

“President Trump will not tolerate violence and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to investigate the matter, but we will not tolerate lawlessness on our streets at all,” Farah said.

Local media said a mobile phone video on social media of Monday’s murder showed Walter Wallace pushing his mother away and heading for police.

In the video, police officers can be heard shouting at Walter Wallace to “put down the knife” after which he was fired upon to stop him.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Wallace’s father, also known as Walter Wallace, said his son had apparently been shot 10 times.

His father said his son was being treated, “Why didn’t you use a teaser (electric shock device)?”, “He had mental problems (so)” “Why didn’t you lower the pistol?” ? ‘

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Daniel Aula said the video raised a number of questions and ordered an investigation.

He said that in the scene he saw this evening, he heard and felt the anger of the community.

“Everyone involved will always be impressed, while I will wait to see the answers to many of the questions currently being asked in the investigation,” he added.
