Pakistani students develop state-of-the-art rice quality testing software

KARACHI: Pakistani students have developed Pakistan’s first artificial intelligence software to test the quality of rice.

Pakistan is the world’s tenth largest rice producer and the rice crop is an important source of foreign exchange through exports as well as meeting food needs. The price of rice is determined on the basis of its classification and quality.

Accurate determination of rice quality is an important means of achieving the best price of rice. Rice quality in Pakistan has so far been determined and graded by traditional manual methods which is a time consuming and difficult task but the talented youth of Pakistan have taken up this difficult task of rice growers, millers, traders and exporters through modern computer technology. Made easy
Teachers and students at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence at NED University have developed Pakistan’s first artificial intelligence computer software that analyzes rice grains in seconds through machine learning and determines its quality.

The software is called Rice Quality Analyzer which is capable of analyzing rice grains in one minute by analyzing the length, thickness, proportion of broken grains, average weight and other important features. This software has given 99% results in the test so far. Pakistani software was also compared with modern Japanese software and the results of software developed in Pakistan were found to be on par with Japanese software.

According to Hafiz Ahsan-ur-Rehman, a research associate at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence, a member of the software development team, the use of artificial intelligence to determine and classify rice is a milestone in the development of Pakistan’s rice industry.

In the traditional manual method of determining the quality of rice, 8 kg of rice samples are collected from 2.5 tons of rice lot, from which more samples are selected and rice samples are examined with the help of human eye, experiment and manual instruments. It takes at least an hour to test a sample and thousands of rupees are charged for testing each sample.

In view of the increasing demand and export volume of rice in Pakistan, the need for testing of rice with the help of computer software has been felt for a long time so that samples can be tested in minimum time and cost. The development of this state-of-the-art software at the local level will reduce the cost of rice classification and increase the testing capacity and will be able to complete export orders in the shortest possible time. Rice Lab Pakistan, a private company providing rice testing services in Pakistan, has provided technical assistance in developing the software.

Rice analysis software is done with images of rice grains scanned with any good quality flat bat scanner. Traders or millers who check the quality of rice can scan the grains of rice with a good quality scanner of official use and send it to the team of Smart City Lab, which is analyzed immediately and the results are provided by email. I am currently providing free testing on a trial basis to popularize this innovative method of analysis.

According to Hafiz Ahsan-ur-Rehman, at present this software is capable of analyzing 7 important features of rice. In the next step, the ability to analyze and identify the color, paleness, red marks, etc. of rice will also be added. He said that the cost of automatic scanner and software developed by an American company for analyzing the quality of rice is PKR 600,000 which is valid for one year.

The software developed by NED University’s Center for Artificial Intelligence is much cheaper and more efficient than this and is in line with the conditions of Pakistan and the requirements of the rice industry.

The software development team is considering providing this software in two ways. The first method will be based on the analysis of images of rice grains sent by traders, exporters or millers. Otherwise the rights to use the software will be sold for a certain period of time.

Advertising of Pakistani software has been started through social media in which besides Pakistani rice companies, full response is also being received from the rice industry of Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and other countries.

In addition, with the help of this system, good areas for rice production can be identified on the basis of rice quality and the best compensation for the labor of rice farmers in the local and international market can be obtained.
