Haroon Rashid’s caliphate can be called the era of the Abbasid government. He did a lot of work in his time to strengthen the government, establish justice and welfare of the people, historians wrote that his constitution was to change clothes in the streets of Baghdad.
He used to patrol all night like Hazrat Omar and inquire about the condition of his subjects, improve the irrigation system for the convenience of the people of the country and set up a permanent department for this purpose which also aims to increase the income. In order to prevent the collection of tribute and carelessness, Shari’ah laws were formulated, which was compiled by Imam Abu Yusuf Qazi Al-Qada, which is still before us today under the name of “Kitab Al-Kharaj”, thus he adopted such a practice. Which benefited everyone.
Haroon Rasheed was very generous of heart and generous of hands. He used to give valuable donations to the needy, poor, widows and the needy. His court was the center of people of all classes. He used to distribute the blessings of Allah to the people, sometimes secretly and sometimes openly. He used to give alms of one thousand dinars daily out of his own pocket, so Allama Suyuti wrote: Haroon Rasheed’s whole period was full of goodness. He was known to be acquitted every day and every night.
One of his great virtues was that he was a great admirer of the scholars. His companions used to gather in his court, make plans for the development of knowledge and provide resources for it. He set up an institute of compilation and translation under the name of Al-Hikmat and appointed expert scholars and translators in it. He had them translate many useful books in Greek, Persian and other languages. He used to listen to the advice of these scholars.
He was fortunate to have the company of Qazi Abu Yusuf (like Kamal Kamal Faqih), the famous Muhaddith Sufyan Sauri and the famous Zahid Fazil bin Ayaz. His wife Zubaydah herself was a virtuous woman who performed many acts of kindness and public welfare. His queen Zubaydah cut a hill for the people of Makkah and brought the water of a spring to the Haram Queen Zubeida performed this great deed which solved the problems faced by the pilgrims and the people of Makkah due to the scarcity of water.
She had a great deal of devotion and love for the companionship and companionship of these personalities. Once Mara bin Samak went to Haroon Rasheed to preach. In front of him, Haroon asked for water to drink. The servant came. Ibn Samak asked Haroon, “If this water is stopped, how much will you buy it to get it?” He said that in exchange for half of the kingdom, when Haroon drank water, he asked how much he would spend to get it out if water could not come out of his body. Haroon Rashid said, “Tomorrow is the kingdom.” Haroon cried after hearing this wise advice. (History of Tabari)
