Facebook’s ‘Supreme Court’ has started work

The Supreme Court, set up by the world’s largest social networking site Facebook to monitor content and review whether or not to remove controversial content, has announced the start of work.

Facebook formed an independent Supreme Court-style board in May this year, dubbed the Oversight Board, and initially has 20 members from different countries.

The Oversight Board also includes Nighat Dad, head of the Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) from Pakistan, and Tawakal Kirmani, a Yemeni human rights activist, journalist and Nobel Laureate from Europe. The 20-member board is also known as Facebook’s “Supreme Court” and will hear or review petitions from at least five members from any region of the world.

The application review team must have one member from the said region or country and no member can decide on any application alone.

A member of the body had told Dawn in the past that although it was mandatory for a member of the region to be included in a request from any region, it was not necessary for a Pakistani member to take care of a request from Pakistan. Join the review committee.

The removal of all 20 members of the committee will not be the prerogative of the Facebook administration, as the board will operate independently, although the chairman and co-chairs of the board will be able to decide whether to remove the members.

The members of Facebook’s so-called “Supreme Court” body will be further expanded to a minimum of 40 members.
