Accidents and trauma over time can affect the brain

Boston: People who have suffered a major trauma, exploitation or trauma in childhood or adolescence may have less ability to learn and understand with age than others.

A new study has found that the effects of this condition are more severe in adolescence than in childhood and may lead to a decrease in certain types of acquisition and mental abilities.

The study was conducted by Margie Lekman, a psychologist at Brandeis University, and her colleagues. She says that if one of the parents dies or the parents are separated, it has a profound psychological effect and the same proportion can lead to mental retardation, but this process can last a lifetime instead of happening all at once.

In this regard, they have surveyed 2,500 men and women between the ages of 28 and 84 between 2004 and 2013. All participants were asked about 12 types of trauma. These include parental divorce or death, mental or physical abuse and beatings, domestic violence, arson, alcohol and drug addiction, floods and other natural disasters. All of these conditions cause temporary psychological distress.

In this regard, detailed questionnaires were also filled from the participants and its effect on two mental states was observed. These include brain executive function (EF) or episodic memory (EM). The EF process enables focus, planning, problem solving and multitasking. While in EM we repeat the information recently memorized or learned.

All participants were seen for nine consecutive years. EF and EM have been shown to be severely affected in people who have had accidents or suffered trauma, and these two learning and understanding mental states change over time and decrease over time. ۔

Explaining the reason, it was said that trauma gives rise to depression and stress, which is a blow to mental capacity. In addition, trauma also affects the body’s internal inflammation and immune system, which further weakens the brain
