Near Sheikhupura, a passenger wagon coming from Karachi to Lahore hit the Shah Hussain Express Karachi, killing 19 people and injuring eight others.
Rana Ijaz, district in-charge of Rescue 1122, confirmed that 19 people were killed in the accident while the condition of five of the injured was said to be critical.
In this regard, District Police Officer (DPO) Ghazi Salahuddin said that the gate was closed at the time of the incident but the driver stopped for a while and tried to cross the gate.
The DPO further said that all those killed were Sikh pilgrims who were riding in 3 coasters out of which 2 coasters had passed.
In this regard, the spokesperson of Railways said that 43 Up Shah Hussain Express coming from Karachi to Lahore collided with an AC coaster at Inmand Level crossing at 1.30 pm in which 15 people were confirmed dead.
A railway spokesman added that railway and district rescue teams had reached the spot and were busy repairing the track and evacuating the injured and dead from the coaster.
A railway spokesman added that all divisional officers were dispatched to the spot.
He also said that after the accident, the Railways has immediately suspended the DEN while the Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has ordered immediate action against those responsible.
