WASHINGTON: After years of nasal congestion and persistent nostrils, it was finally discovered that a plastic knife stuck in a child’s nose was the main cause.
At the age of 8, a child (name withheld for medical reasons) complained that his nose was blocked. This process continued for many years, after which the ability to smell seemed to disappear completely. But when he exhaled through his nose, he smelled a stench that everyone else could feel.
It has been described as an extraordinary event in medical history, as described in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s Hand and Neck Surgery. Doctors first inserted a camera into the nose with the help of a flexible string and found out that a 16-year-old boy now suffers from ‘turbinate hypertrophy’ in which the narrow nasal passages become enlarged. This is usually due to an allergy or some other reason. However, things turned out differently here.
The doctors gave him some medicine which proved to be useless. But when he blew out his nose, the stench spread throughout the room. But interestingly, the patient himself did not even realize it because he had lost the sense of smell.
The doctors then performed a detailed CT scan of the child and found a round piece of plastic stuck in the top of his nose. But he never realized it. This piece of plastic got stuck in the nose when the child was eight or nine years old. During the game, a knife went into his nose which he could not feel.
According to Dylan Irwin, a professor at the University of Texas, a blocked nasal passage has caused fluid, inhaled dust, and germs and bacteria to remain there for a long time and rot. Even the air passing by was coming out with a stench.
In this condition, the patient does not have a fever and the infection does not spread throughout the body. The same thing happened to this patient and his disease was repeatedly ignored. Then several tissue covers were placed on the plastic granule and thus it could not be identified. The experts removed it after much effort and very carefully cut the tissues that had accumulated on it.
