80% accurate detection of cancer through respiratory

Melbourne: Yes! Some types of cancer can now be identified by breathing. This system can diagnose cancer with 80% accuracy.

Scientists at Flanders University in Australia have said that if cancer develops in the throat, neck, mouth or any part of the head, certain types of chemicals are released in the breath. VOCs are volatile organic compounds that are fast-moving chemicals.

It should be noted that head and neck cancer is currently the sixth biggest challenge in the list of deadly cancers. It kills 300,000 people every year. If the disease is identified early, it is easy to treat, but often it is too late because it is also a problem.
That’s why low-cost and less-painful methods were being used to diagnose the cancer, after which Australian scientists have developed a complete system that can detect the cancer with 80% accuracy. Early experiments have yielded very encouraging results.

But it is very difficult to find only biomarkers of cancer in the breath. “Our system can detect the breath of a healthy person and a person suffering from neck and head cancer and successfully detect cancer compounds,” said Dr. Roger Yazbek, a lead scientist who conducted the study.

The experiment tested 181 people who were at risk for early-stage cancer and had not begun treatment. For this, a mass spectrometer was chosen in the flotube. The technology identified 80 percent of respiratory cancers and reported 86 percent of cancers. After that, when all these people were biopsied, the disease was further confirmed.

With further improvements, the device is expected to be able to quickly diagnose respiratory neck and throat cancer.
